The Swedish lawn game

What is Kubb?

Two sides take turns throwing wooden batons at the other side's kubbs. The field is 5 × 8 metres, with five kubbs on each baseline and the king in the middle. Knock down every opposing kubb, then fell the king to win. Hit the king too early and you lose.

01

Throw the batons

Take turns aiming underarm throws at the five kubbs on the opposite baseline.

02

Clear the field

Fallen kubbs return to the other half and stand there as field kubbs.

03

Fell the king

Once the other side's kubbs are down, one final throw at the king decides the game.

How it plays

A throw you can feel

Throw each baton underarm. It turns through the air, lands in the grass and sends wooden kubbs tipping into one another. Fallen kubbs are thrown into the other half and raised as field kubbs. Clear those first, advance to the advantage line, and earn your throw at the king.

The rules are always close by: an in-game board explains the game across five pages, with chalk drawings for every step. You do not need to know Kubb before you begin.

The meadow

An autumn afternoon by the lake

Red and golden trees surround a meadow beside a mountain lake. A sailing yacht crosses the water, a falun-red cottage sits nearby, and a hedgehog visits the grass. Birds and paragliders move across the sky.

Water, waves and quiet music give the match its rhythm. The music can be switched off whenever you prefer the sounds of the meadow.
